Liverpool’s best Premier League victories over Tottenham Hotspur

With the Premier League season now well underway, it’s becoming clear which teams are likely to contend at the top of the table. Indeed, there are a number of sides who have impressed greatly in the opening weekend, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur being two of them.

The two teams will meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 30, and it will be interesting to see how the Spurs Liverpool betting odds shape up. On one hand, Tottenham have been buoyed by the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, and will be motivated to lay down a statement of intent. On the other, Liverpool appear to be back to somewhere near their best under Jurgen Klopp, and will fancy setting down a marker themselves.

It’s a game Liverpool have traditionally had a very good record in, and unfortunately for Spurs fans, there have been a number of convincing victories for the Reds over the years. As we gear up for this clash of giants, let’s take a look at some of Liverpool’s best wins over Tottenham.

Liverpool 6-2 Tottenham, May 1993

The first Premier League season was not an altogether happy one for Liverpool, with the club ultimately finishing in sixth position. However, a 6-2 win over Spurs at Anfield was certainly a highlight towards the end of the campaign.

Goals from Ian Rush and John Barnes gave Liverpool a 2-0 lead going into half time, before a flurry of goals in the second half.

First, a Teddy Sheringham strike got Tottenham back into the game, before an own goal by Stuart Nethercott restored Liverpool’s cushion. Steve Sedgley made it 3-2 with 13 minutes to play, before further finishes from Mark Walters, Rush and Barnes in the final 10 minutes made it a rout for the home team.

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham, November 1997

Three and a half years later, Liverpool gave Spurs another hiding at Anfield.

It was only in the second half that Liverpool kicked into gear, with four different goalscorers contributing to a convincing win.

Steve McManaman, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Jamie Redknapp and Michael Owen were the ones to notch, as the Reds put Spurs to the sword.

Tottenham 0-5 Liverpool, December 2013

One of Liverpool’s most memorable wins over Tottenham was the 5-0 victory at White Hart Lane back in December 2013.

Liverpool were in fine form under Brendan Rodgers at the time, and Spurs felt the full force of their attacking excellence.

Goals from Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson gave Liverpool a comfortable lead at half-time, but they didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half. Further strikes from Jon Flanagan, Suarez and Raheem Sterling made it a memorable trip to the capital for Liverpool’s supporters.

Liverpool 4-0 Tottenham, March 2014

A few months later, Liverpool gave Spurs another kicking, this time at Anfield. An early own goal from Younes Kaboul set the tone, before Suarez lashed in a second midway through the first half.

A sensational drive and finish from Philippe Coutinho made it 3-0 in the second half, before Henderson’s free kick evaded everyone and nestled in the corner for a fourth.

Tottenham 0-3 Liverpool, August 2014

A 3-0 win at White Hart Lane compounded Spurs’ terrible record against the Reds around 2013 and 2014.

Sterling scored early to give Liverpool the lead, before a Steven Gerrard penalty made it 2-0 in the second half.

The highlight of the game came from Liverpool’s then new signing Alberto Moreno, who charged up the field before lashing a left-footed strike into the bottom corner, sealing a plain-sailing win in the process.
