Parsi New Year is celebrated among the entire Parsi Community usually in the month of March. The day is calculated as per the Gregorian calendar. Parsis recognize it as the first day of the month of Fasli calendar. In other words, it is the celebration of Jamshed Navroz (King of Persia). The festival took place in the memory of the king, who started created the Parsi calendar. It is believed by the community that on Parsi New Year, the universe was created and thus, life came into existence on this beautiful planet.
Celebrations of Parsi New Year:
Parsis is the only community that strongly respects the elders in their family and show utmost care for their parents. Every house celebrates this day just like the New Year of 31st. They get up in the morning, arrange their house, clean the same, take a bath, buy new clothes, and wear them to begin the day beautifully.
Rangoli is made at the entrance of the house and incense sticks are lighted. The community also serves food to the needy. A few things are kept on the table in a systematic manner as a ritual of the celebrations. These things include:
- Fruits
- Flowers
- Sugar
- Bread
- Coins
- Candles
- Mirror
- Incense Sticks
- Picture of Zarathustra
By arranging these things and praying to the lord brings prosperity to them.
How is Parsi New Year celebrated?
A sweet dish is made by combining Rava (Suji), sugar, and milk. A dessert is also made of Vermicelli. The dish is served during breakfast. Most of the families visit their nearby temple that is known as Agiary and wish each other ‘Happy New Year’ or ‘Saal Mubarak’.
A special lunch is prepared that includes pulav made of saffron and nuts, fish, plain rice, moong daal and faluda. Many people visit each other’s’ houses to celebrate this day together. Unmarried women in the family throw seeds into a river in the wish for a good husband. When you visit their house, you will receive a warm welcome with sprinkle of rose water.
Different Parsis spend their day in different styles. Some visit to the theatres whereas some visit their friends’ houses for some moments of togetherness. They arrange a grand feast dinner for the guests. Some Parsi customs are similar to Hindu customs. Parsis are known to spread sweetness around; it is no wonder that their festival is full of joy.
